Government is set to ban drivers from overtaking buses in school zones following the death of Tyaisha Cox.

The six-year-old died after being knocked down outside Purvis Primary in Warwick on Thursday after getting off a bus and using a pedestrian crossing.

It is thought Tyaisha was hit by a driver who was overtaking the bus as it offloaded its passengers.

Transport Minister Ewart Brown said: "We are still reeling from that young girl's death.

"We are coming up with some effective legislation for as soon as the House re-opens to try to prevent a re-occurrence.

"We need to stop overtaking in school zones. There is no law that prevents motorists from overtaking a bus," said Dr. Brown.

"In many, many jurisdictions the law is as soon as a bus has stopped in a school zone and the lights are flashing, no motorist can pass. We are definitely looking at something like that."

Government will now work on the details, Dr. Brown said.
