Governor Sir John Vereker has little to add to statements made by the Police Commissioner on the now concluded investigation of the Bermuda Housing Corporation.

?I have been kept fully informed about the investigation throughout. The Commissioner?s statement was made with my knowledge and approval and I think there?s very little I can usefully add,? Sir John said yesterday.

?London are already aware of the outcome of the investigation. In terms of anything else going to happen, I note that the Commissioner of Police has referred the issue of the Criminal Code to the responsible Minister and I note that the Auditor General has been invited to take a further look at those behaviours which do not amount to criminality... and I hope that lessons are being learned in the appropriate places.?

This week, Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith and DPP consultant Kulendra Ratneser announced that the two year investigation into mismanagement and misconduct had been closed. Mr. Ratneser said that unethical behaviour involving elected officials had been unearthed but that there was little that could be deemed criminal under the law.

The development has sparked calls by the Opposition United Bermuda Party for the resignation of those involved in the scandal. And Premier Alex Scott has indicated that his Government will be making moves to update the Criminal Code.
