Royal Gazette junior reporter, Clay Smith took to the streets of Hamilton yesterday and asked people their views on the new Government policy of reserved parking at the Bermuda International Airport.

People were asked "Do you feel that there should be reserved parking for Government Ministers at the airport?"

Opinions were overwhelmingly against the move.

Most that we spoke with insisted that their names not be printed but there were a few who didn't mind.

For example Carleen Richardson said: "Not all the time, but when dignitaries are due in the Island it's alright."

A lady who would only tell us she is Simone, said: "No, they shouldn't have a VIP parking spot. Who or what makes them any different or better from anyone else?"

Paulette Burford: "No, they should not get preferential treatment, they already receive it with the size cars they have on the road. "I feel that they should go back to the long term parking for people with short trips".

C. Lowe: I don't mind to a certain extent.

One woman held that they (the Government ministers) are just " normal people and they should look for a spot just like us. They are no different. They just have a title," she said.

Another person said "No, they should be like everybody else. The Prime Minister maybe."

A man said that while he did not "have a problem with the actual reserving of the spot" that "the problem lies within their rudeness and arrogance".

"It's not really a problem if they are on duty," another man held.

Another woman was quite alright with it. She said: "They are Government Ministers and people need to understand that the job comes with perks. It would be different if it was in the middle of Hamilton".

Last week signs were erected at the airport notifying drivers that a certain area had been designated no parking in order for Government cars to be accommodated.
