A company involved in the controversial scheme to introduce global positioning satellite technology for taxis is being sued for allegedly not paying a firm of consultants.

Independent Media Services (IMS) is suing Advance Tech Solutions for $62,500 for work it allegedly carried out in relation to the project.

IMS was contracted to provide a business plan for the GPS system for Advance Tech Solutions and also the company to run the scheme, Bermuda Central Dispatch Corporation.

The case came to Supreme Court yesterday and was adjourned because Advance Tech Solutions did not have legal counsel.

Newly-elected Progressive Labour Party MP George Scott, a Bermuda Industrial Union organiser, appeared on behalf of Advance Tech yesterday. But Puisne Judge Ian Kawaley adjourned the matter because Advance Tech did not have a lawyer in court.

IMS, which was represented by Mark Diel, is claiming $35,000 for preparing the business plan for Advance Tech and Bermuda Central Dispatch Corporation plus $27,500 in consultancy fees. Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown has pledged to bring in a GPS system for taxis, although most drivers are opposed to the scheme.

In the run-up to the election while under pressure from drivers, Dr Brown refused to say if he would force the drivers to accept a GPS if the PLP won the election.

Since the July 24 victory, Government has made no further statements to clarify if it will push ahead with GPS.
