Transport Minister Ewart Brown has admitted his plan to force taxi cabs to install global positioning systems (GPS) "is not the highest priority" for Government.

Taxi drivers opposed the plan which was blocked by the Senate last summer.

And Dr. Brown said he could not give a timetable for when Government would attempt to bring it in again.

He said: "When we are ready to come forward it will be a most palatable package.

"I am no longer going to refer to it as a GPS. It is a computerised dispatch system."

However he admitted the GPS component would remain unless "someone came up with something better".
