Green light for Middle Road development

Developers have been given the green light to carry on with plans for six new housing units on Middle Road, the Department of Planning has revealed.

According to the Development Applications Board?s minutes, dated June 9, Cherokee and Sunset Trusts received permission for their plans to construct three buildings and six pools on the 1.02 acre site off of Middle Road, across from Spur Hill.

Businessmen Ricky E. Lines and R. E. ?Ron? Lines submitted the plans.

The Planning Department?s permission comes despite a number of objections filed by nearby residents against the apartment project. Of prime concern, as one objector said in a letter to the board, was the ?massive over-development? which the new apartment complex promises for the Tee-Street neighbourhood.

The same objector accused the owners of ?prostituting the property any way they can? with what he called ?a monstrous development?. Concerns were raised over the increase in traffic the units will bring to the area as well as the potential resulting environmental damage.

The objections were received after the plans were advertised between the April 19 and 23 of this year.

Writing a letter in response to these objections, the agent for the Cherokee and Sunset Trusts, Conyers & Associates, said that the number of units and the size of the development was permitted under the Government?s zoning regulations.

?We are creating more houses and housing opportunities at a time when there is a housing shortage,? the agent said.

The plans, which were submitted in March this year, layout three new buildings on the site, each with two units. All the units have identical two story layout a pool adjacent.

There will be three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a balcony on the second floor, a first floor with a family room, kitchen, dining room, living room and a small half bath. Each unit will also have a basement.

This latest development comes a year after Cherokee and Sunset Trusts were granted permission to widen the access road to the property.

Planning permission was granted on a number of conditions including the provision of parking and manoeuvring space for six cars in compliance with planning regulations as well as a communal garbage storage unit.
