Hundreds of kids expected for the Telford Electric Magic Mile
HUNDREDS of kids will be in the spotlight at the National Sports Centre on Saturday afternoon when the annual Telford Electric Magic Mile is staged. Race director Cal Simons said this week: "It is one of the most popular events for our children. They come out in the hundreds and for most of them this will be the first time they have been to the National Sports Centre. Usually they run on the beach or at school but on Saturday they get the chance to run on the track and that is exciting for them."
Simons who is also head coach at the Pacers Track Club, said he will also be keeping an eye out for future track stars. "You always get track coaches up there having a look at the kids even though most are too young to join a club. But we like to cast an eye over them."
The days starts with the four-year-old boys and girls who run a quarter mile on the track. The running continues all afternoon and finishes with the 10-12 year old boys and girls who actually run a mile.
"It is always a great day out for the kids and their families," said Simons adding, "there will be refreshments available as well as a fun castle and hopefully face painting which the kids really love."
All the kids will get T-shirts and the award presentation will be conducted after each race. There are 11 races in all.
"We will also have draw prizes like bikes for the four year olds and Ipods for the primary and middle school kids," Simons said.
The rain date is March 1.
