Hundreds sign on for health week activities

More than 600 people have so far agreed to take part in Cycle, Run or Walk to Work Day next week in a bid to promote healthier lifestyles.

The special event will be held on April 9 as part of Public Health Week, which is set to run from Monday to Friday with the aim of increasing awareness about health and fitness.

Health Minister Nelson Bascome said: "On April 9, we are inviting the community to think about foregoing their normal way of getting to or from work by either cycling, running or walking.

"Health is our most precious asset, but unfortunately many people do not invest in their health until a serious health problem occurs.

"It is a proven fact that a healthier lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of serious health problems, increase energy levels and prolong life."

Mr. Bascome said the response to the Cycle, Run or Walk to Work Day had been impressive.

"We have received an overwhelming response from companies and businesses throughout the Island, as well as members of our Civil Service.

"It is encouraging to see that there are people who take their health and well-being seriously."

The main event of next week will be a special walk through Hamilton between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m., starting from Victoria Park, travelling along Dundonald Street, Parliament Street, Front Street, Queen Street and ending at City Hall.

In addition, the Department of Health has also organised for health screenings next Tuesday and Thursday at the MarketPlace supermarket and the Bank of Bermuda, both in Somerset, at the Library in Hamilton, and at St. Peter's Church in St. George's.

Minister Bascome added: "The promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours in businesses around the world has resulted in benefits, such as decreased absenteeism, increased productivity and significant decreases in health care claims.

"We are hoping that from this initiative policy changes could be introduced which support best health practices in the workplace."
