Police are widening the net overseas in their search for Kenith Clifton Bulford who skipped Police bail after being interviewed in connection with the slaying of student Shaundae Jones.

Police say Bulford has a history of going missing while on Police bail having left the country during the 1990s during anti-drug Operation Cleansweep.

Mr. Jones was murdered with a single shotgun blast to his chest outside Club Malabar in Dockyard in April.

Yesterday Chief Insp. Stuart Crockwell, who is running the investigation, said: “We have have had no report in the last six weeks of him being spotted. Obviously we are not just concentrating on the local environment.

“We have also gone outside the jurisdiction to see if he may be out there. We don't have his passport because he is on Police bail and we are not allowed to take it.”

He said information had dried up despite Police taking the unusual step recently of promising a $5,000 reward for anyone with information on his whereabouts.

Bulford was last spotted in Sandys. “We followed up but nothing materialised,” said Chief Insp. Crockwell.

Now Police are linking up with authorities overseas including New Jersey where Bulford stayed during eight years away from Bermuda.

Chief Insp. Crockwell said: “We know he stayed out in the States for many years. He skipped Police bail during Operation Cleansweep eight or nine years ago.”

Wanted posters will be sent abroad and to International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).

In September, Police came up empty-handed after mounting an armed dawn raid involving more than 30 officers for Bulford at the empty Newstead hotel.

At that time Police were adamant that Bulford, who is known to frequent Somerset and St. David's, was still in Bermuda.

But yesterday one Police source said: “I am of the opinion he's not here. He would be a fool to still be here. It's such a small place eventually you are going to get caught.”

Bermuda College student Shaundae Jones, 20, from Smith's Avenue, Warwick, was shot at about 3. a.m. on Sunday, April 27 outside the nightclub, where he had been with friends.

It is believed he was standing beside a friend's car opposite the club when a masked gunman approached and shot him once in the chest. The killer then ran.

Shaundae's mother has said Bulford should have been given harsher conditions to abide by rather than being released on Police bail.

However The Royal Gazette understands Police did not have sufficient evidence against him.

Bulford, 28, is about six feet four inches tall, brown-skinned, of medium build and weighing about 180 to 200 pounds.
