Hunt launched for machete-wielding robber

A shop worker ran for his life at the weekend after an armed robber entered the store brandishing a machete.

The 59-year-old Hamilton Parish man fled to the back of the store, while the robber climbed over the counter and stole an unspecified bundle of cash from the till.

The salesman, who works at St. George's Liquor, told Police that he was behind the counter at about 6.40 p.m. on Saturday carrying out stocktaking duties with another male employee.

At the time, they were the only people in the store.

Last night Police spokesman Robin Simmons said: "Suddenly, a man entered the store and approached the 59-year-old brandishing a machete. The suspect demanded money from the complainant.

"The complainant fled to the back of the store, while the culprit jumped over the counter and took an unspecified amount of money from the cash register. The culprit then made good his escape."

The armed robber is described as a brown-skinned male, who was wearing blue denim jeans with a blue hooded top, and possibly a white T-Shirt.

Inquiries are underway and anyone with information should call Police on 295-0011, or CrimeStoppers, where details can be offered anonymously, on 1-800-623-8477.
