Work release has paid off for soon-to-be freed prisoner Coltrane Ratteray who has saved more than $8,000 working in construction.

Although currently laid off, he worked for three months with MP Arthur Pitcher's construction firm after taking a carpentry course at Westgate and the prison farm. He said: "I decided to make something of the time rather than let the time do me. I got strong so I won't fall back into the elements that got me into prison when I was hanging out."

Before starting work release he prepared by getting up at 6 a.m. for a strenuous exercise routine over several months. However, the 36-year-old admits handling tools took getting used to.

He is keen to work again both before and after his release later this month and is inviting offers. "I will take whatever comes my way," said Ratteray, adding that he would prefer to work in masonry, painting or carpentry. Jailed for theft several years ago Ratteray is no stranger to jail but says this time he is on the straight and narrow.
