The US Consulate General has contacted Bermuda Police after an American Immigration officer was attacked in St. George's.

The 34-year-old officer, who had just arrived on the Island, was assaulted by a group of thugs in York Street on February 15 and the attackers have still not been caught.

A US Consulate General official said: "The Police Commissioner (Jonathan Smith) has been informed and he is handling it. We regret that someone has been hurt and we support what the Governor and local government officials are trying to do."Government House, which acts as interface between the consular community and Bermuda authorities, has also contacted Police about the incident to seek information.

A spokesman for Government House told The Royal Gazette: "I can confirm there has been correspondence between the acting US Consul General and the Deputy Governor's Office about the incident.

"Government House has expressed great regret and has asked the Consul General to pass on our best wishes to the officer for a speedy recovery following this very unfortunate incident. Government House is pursuing the matter with the Bermuda Police Service as the Deputy Governor's office is the normal interface between the consular community and the Bermuda."

Police said last night: "Police did respond to an incident, however they were unable to locate any of the culprits. There is currently an active investigation into this incident."
