Impaired driving landed guest worker Piotr Gawalewicz a $2,000 fine in Magistrates' Court, yesterday.

The 22-year-old resident of Coral Acres Drive, Southampton pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on August 1 on South Road in Paget, as well as driving without a licence.

Magistrate Edward King fined him $2,000 for impaired driving, an additional $100 for not having a licence and banned him from driving all vehicles for the next three years.

Police were attending the scene of an accident he was involved in when they noticed that his speech was slurred and there was a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

He told Police that he had had a "few" drinks, and was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police station.

Gawalewicz, the court was told, had a previous impaired driving offence in late 2002. He apologised to the court and was ordered to pay the fines by Friday or face 180 days in jail.
