Premier Jennifer Smith and Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott yesterday opened a new basketball court at the Parsons Road playground, in Pembroke.

The court marks the second phase of the Marsh Folley redevelopment. The project, located in Hamilton's `back of town', also features a playground opposite Victor Scott School.

Mr. Scott said the project had been ongoing for the past three years with the aim of developing the area it into a full recreational facility. The Minister also noted that the court had already been put to use by neighbourhood hoops fans.

"This opening is only formal; I've been told that we have competitions going on and teams are also preparing for competition," he said.

"This is part of a larger phase. Already we can see that we have what looks like a very impressive stream-like marsh. Over time, we will have this as a total recreational area where you can come, play, bring children and walk."

Noting the rejuvenated look of the area, Premier Smith said it had come a long way from it's days as a dump - and she said it would even get better.

"There are a generations of people born on Parsons Road who take pride in the fact that they are `pond dogs'. I want all to know that future generations cannot do that," said Ms Smith.

"There will be no more stories about pond dogs and what took place in what used to be. Instead, there will probably be stories about playing in what will be a very nice park and recreational facility."

The Premier said that a lot of the work which has gone on in the area is a credit to the Department of Works and Engineering and the Department of Parks, who she thanked.

"On behalf on the residents of Parsons Road in particular and on behalf of the future generations (to be) born in Pembroke, I want to say thank you for all that you have done to make this such a wonderful facility."
