'It's always great to see a son of the soil perform at the highest level'
Sports leaders across the Island have thrown their weight behind Bermudian linebacker Antonio Pierce in his bid to become a Super Bowl champion.
He is the first Bermudian to play in the prestigious event and is the second Bermudian behind Ralph (Rocky) Thompson to wear a Giants uniform.
Mr. Pierce, whose father Cleo Burrows lives in Southampton, will now attempt to ruin the New England Patriots perfect season to claim Super Bowl XLII at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona.
President of the Bermuda Football Association, Larry Mussenden is backing the linebacker and said: "On behalf of the Bermuda Football Association, we want to wish Antonio Pierce and his New York Giants all the best in the Super Bowl. We are all proud of him for being an instrumental part of the Giants and for working hard all season to get to the Super Bowl."
He added: "However, we know it will be no easy task as the New England Patriots will be keen to cap off a brilliant season themselves. In any event, go Antonio, go Bermuda."
Football legend, Clyde Best, echoed Mr. Mussenden's comments and said: "The Super Bowl is quite large, probably as big as World Cup. To be participating in that, we want to wish him all the best and hope he does well."
Newly appointed Sports Minister, El James also backs Mr. Pierce despite being a Patriots fan.
"It's always great to see a son of the soil perform at the highest level, which in this instance is the Super Bowl. And I would like to take this opportunity to wish Antonio and his Giants teammates all the best- although unfortunately, I will be rooting for New England instead."
"I know Antonio's family quite well and I think he has done them and Bermuda very proud. Antonio has done extremely well to command a regular spot in the Giants' team."
Former Sports Minister, Randy Horton said: "He's an example of what dedication and preparation will bring to athletes. I certainly wish him all the very best for him and his team although I am a NFC fan. I look forward to the Giants upsetting the New England Patriots. Antonio can be such an asset to Bermuda as well because when you reach that stage, Antonio is a young man who is profiled in the Giants organisation and I think it's great that we have a Bermudian there."
