A Magistrates Court in Hanover, Jamaica, has begun a preliminary inquiry into the murder of Bermudian Greg Daniels - who was hacked to death on the grounds of his holiday home on August 22 by two men.

After killing Mr. Daniels, the men raided the home and some $4,000 in American currency was stolen.

Police must have a preliminary inquiry first under the Jamaican system and if the judge decides there is a prima facie case, it will proceed to a higher court.

Mr. Daniels, 47 was a welder who had been in Jamaica for several months and had just finished building his dream home in the Hanover neighbourhood at the time of his death.

He was considering a permanent move to the Caribbean nation.

Two builders were charged with the murder by Jamaican authorities early last month. Police said one of the accused used to work for the victim.

The Hanover men - Orlando Anderson, a 26-year-old carpenter from Dundee Penn, and Mark Campbell, a 23-year-old mason from Brissett - have been remanded in custody while the preliminary inquiry is ongoing.

Judge George Bruton will be hearing the inquiry and making a decision on whether to send the men to trial in higher court.

Jamaican Police said that Mr. Daniels was pulled into a bushy area and chopped to death.

He died of multiple machete wounds to his neck, back and chest.
