Judge lowers the boom on pair of bullies
Two male teenagers who appeared in Plea Court yesterday received a tongue lashing and fines from Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves for "bullying" their peers.
Mr. Greaves told the Pembroke youths: "You haven't borne this man, you don't feed him, or clothe him, but you think you can bully him".
Eighteen-year-old Jahai Mallory of Hillview Lane and unemployed Prince Edness, 16, of St. John's Hill, both pleaded guilty to assaulting Salih Shawki on April 30, at the National Stadium.
Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson told the court that during the Senior School Sports at around 12.30 p.m., Mr. Shawki was approached by a jeering Mallory.
After trying to leave the area, Mr. Shawki was approached by a group of boys, including Edness, who struck him in the head with a helmet, bruising him.
The report also said Edness was pressured by Mallory to bring out an offensive weapon to further threaten the victim.
Edness and Mallory were each fined $250 which has to be paid by next week Friday or they will have to spend 40 days in prison.
Mallory also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of assault and possession of a dangerous weapon in a public area.
Mrs. Vaucrosson told the court that on April 28, while at a reggae concert in Bernard Park, Mallory demanded money from Granville Fleming.
After refusing to give Mallory money, Fleming left the area on his motorcycle.
When he returned, he was approached for the second time by an angry Mallory who hit him in the face with a broken bottle.
Fleming was treated for his injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Mallory told the court he was provoked into his actions: "Them boys jumped me earlier that night so when I saw one of them by himself I hit him with the bottle".
He was fined $150, to be paid by June 21, for having an offensive weapon and another $250 fine for wounding with a weapon which was to be paid by June 28.
Mr. Greaves warned Edness and Mallory: "You know who caused the killings at schools like Columbine? The bullies."
Edness replied: "I ain't no bully".
Mr. Greaves said: "Shut up! You are a bully. You get in my face and I'll show you how much of a bully you are."
