Cleaner compost toilets are being installed at John Smith?s Bay, Eastwood Park and the Arboretum. The new toilet at John Smith?s Bay is a replacement for the one destroyed during Hurricane Fabian.
?Compost toilets are a very natural way of taking care of waste without polluting the environment,? Park Planner Drew Pettit said.
?Typically the underground storage tank is filled with sawdust and introduced micro-organisms, which act as a natural material to accelerate the decomposition process. The end product is a natural compost that, unlike chemical toilets, can be used or disposed of with no harmful effects to the environment.?
Mr. Pettit said a similar unit had recently been installed at Warwick playground above Warwick Long Bay Beach.
?The new units will be installed with a traditional Bermuda roof,? he said.
