A man who claimed he was a kleptomaniac when he appeared in Magistrates' Court charged with stealing a disposable camera has until Wednesday to prove it.

Courtney Rawlins, 34, of White Hill, Sandys, pleaded not guilty on Friday to stealing the Kodak Max disposable camera worth $15.95 from the MarketPlace, saying he had a stealing problem, and could produce a doctor's report to prove it, if necessary.

Duty counsel Peter Farge told the court that Rawlins was a manic depressive.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves said: "A lot of people are depressed and they don't steal. Mental claims."

But Rawlins pleaded: "But I am a kleptomaniac."

Mr. Farge said: "If he goes into a shop - he can't stop himself from stealing. He is just waiting for a doctor's report that proves it."

Mr. Greaves adjourned the matter until Wednesday.
