A defence counsel was told he would be sent to jail if he didn?t quit interrupting the plea court session yesterday in Magistrates? Court.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves told defence lawyer Peter Farge he would send him to jail along with a defendant, whom he was helping after the Magistrate remanded him in custody for the weekend because he failed to show up for three court dates.

Owen Jason Place of Spring Valley, Pembroke pleaded not guilty to a speeding ticket and had missed his last scheduled trial date on November 26.

Yesterday, Mr. Greaves remanded the man in custody although Place tried to explain he thought the date on his court card read December 26.

Mr. Farge was visibly upset by Mr. Greaves? comments, asking the Magistrate to repeat himself when a confrontation between them broke out.

When contacted Mr. Farge to find out if he would be filing a complaint with the Bermuda Bar Council he said he could not comment.

Mr. Farge said: ?I do not try to publicly denigrate the judges, it?s just not appropriate. I always like to respect the bench.?

The man was released from prison last night after Mr. Farge received the order from Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons. His trial date is December 8.
