League undergoes overhaul as C division is scrapped

THE Commercial League has undergone another major revamp as the C division is scrapped and the B division is expanded to 14 teams.

However B will be split into two sections of seven teams each with the section winners having a play-off to decide the title.

Bermuda Football Association leagues and competitions chairman Charles Clarke said the two sections would be a mix of teams rather than putting the better sides in one section and the weaker sides in another.

The BFA have acted after the C division, only set up two years ago, dwindled to just four teams with a plethora of no-shows making a mockery of the schedule.

Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club return to the B division after dropping out for a year while new team St. David's come on board.

However Island XI, relegated last year from Division A, have dropped out of the league altogether with the nucleus of the squad signing for Robin Hood.

And Prison Officer have also dropped out of the B division after struggling to raise enough players.

Division A is back to ten teams. Dandy Town Roots captain Lloyd Christopher said he was confident his side could retain its title after keeping the side together over the summer break.

He said: "We have basically the same teams so our chances are good regarding retaining the title. We also plan on advancing far in the knock out competition."

The only departure is utility player Justin Robinson while front-man Joey Weeks is the major new addition.

Christopher said: "Joey Weeks is a prolific striker. He was away in school for the past couple of years. He was also a member of the Dandy Town of the 1980s.

"I am expecting him to be an additional menace to opposition defences along with our returning lethal attackers."

Christopher forecast his side's major rivals this year will be familiar teams from years gone by - North Village and Key West Rangers, while newly-promoted Somerset Extros will also be in contention after winning back-to-back C and B division titles.

Key West Rangers are still in the hunt for more players to boost the squad after midfielder Steven Mendes returned to Somerset Trojans.
