Lopes eyes hotel for Loughlands estate
Developer Gilbert Lopes is planning to build a new 82-room hotel, 40 condominiums and two swimming pools at the site of the old Loughlands Guest House in Paget.
Mr. Lopes has applied to the Development Applications Board to build the hotel and condos at 79 South Road.
?It?s just going in for approval right now,? Mr. Lopes said yesterday.
The hotel will consist of 82 one-bedroom units, he said, and would probably be called Loughlands as it is being built on the 9.2 acre Loughlands estate.
?We will build the hotel before the condos,? he said. ?The hotel is expected to cost $8 million to $10 million to build. But there is no price on the condos yet.?
The Loughlands hotel will consist of three four storey buildings and one two-storey building, he said.
?There will be 40,000 square feet of hotel,? he said.
And because of the housing crisis, Mr. Lopes said he wanted to build 40 homes for new families. ?The condos will be for first-time home owners,? he said.
However, Mr. Lopes said the selling price and the amount of time it takes to get planning permission were inversely proportional.
?Two years ago starter home cost $600,000 but now it costs $800,000,? he said.
The architect for the Loughlands project is Michael Emery of Entasis Architecture, but could not be reached for comment yesterday.
