Two people were tossed out of Magistrates' Court yesterday for not being properly dressed.

Vincent Burch walked into the court expecting to face charges of having no driving licence and having an unlicensed motor car, but was told by Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves to leave and come back when he was properly dressed.

Burch had on a blue vest with large numbers, long shorts and sneakers specked with paint.

He told Mr. Greaves that he had come straight from work and he did not have time to change.

Mr. Greaves said: "Leave man."

Burch left and was handed a rain jacket by someone in the court. He returned and was charged with the offences.

Immediately after Burch was asked to leave the court, Ulrika Caines entered wearing cut-off jeans shorts and a white polo shirt.

Mr. Greaves said: "I must treat everyone the same. Go and come back when you are dressed properly - I have got to set a standard."

Caines began crying and explained to Mr. Greaves that she and her baby were sick and that was why she did not have much clothing on.

Mr. Greaves would not hear her excuse and asked her to leave. Caines left and was given a jean jacket to cover herself up.

She was then charged with disobeying a traffic sign.

Mr. Greaves said: "I am enforcing the court rules."

There are ten rules ranging from dress codes to cellular phones. Number one is "Persons in court must be neatly and respectfully dressed".
