A man pleaded not guilty to seven charges of theft in Magistrates' Court yesterday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance for mention, which was set for August 23.

Michael Ruben DeSilva, 23, of no fixed abode, heard Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner read off the seven charges of stealing that have occurred over the last month.

Mr. Warner charged DeSilva with stealing a handbag on June 20 in Southampton, the contents of which were valued at $800.

The next day, June 21, DeSilva allegedly stole a Suzuki FD100 motorcycle, valued at $1,500, in Pembroke.

He is charged with another handbag snatching that occurred on June 26 in Southampton. The handbag itself was valued at $50, and it contained $70 in cash.

On the same day, Mr. Warner told the court, DeSilva armed himself with a stick and attempted to rob a man of his wallet in Warwick.

On June 30 in Pembroke, DeSilva allegedly stole a 14k gold, 24in long chain that was valued at $1,300.

Again in Pembroke on July 2, DeSilva is charged with stealing another handbag, the contents of which were valued at $445.

Finally, he allegedly stole a handbag from a woman in Sandys. A digital camera and $20 in cash add up to a total $500 value.

DeSilva also faced seven traffic violation charges since February which ranged from driving an unlicensed auxiliary cycle without a driver's licence to disobeying a traffic sign. DeSilva pleaded guilty to all the charges and Mr. Warner gave him a choice of a fine or time in jail for each offence. DeSilva asked Mr. Warner if he could "do the time", and Mr. Warner sentenced DeSilva to serve the time for the largest offence ? driving an uninsured cycle ? saying: "You do the three months (the amount of time for being uninsured) and all the other offences are concurrent."
