A Devonshire man who attacked a Police officer after leading him on a high speed chase was fined $2,250 at Magistrates Court yesterday.

Andre Roach, 37, admitted punching the officer several times in Vesey Street, Devonshire, on September 27 after he had stopped him on his bike following a chase which began on North Shore Road.

Roach took off at high speed along North Shore after refusing to stop when signalled to by the officer, said Crown counsel Cindy Clarke .

When Roach eventually stopped in Loyal Hill Road, Devonshire, and was told he was being arrested, he punched the officer several times in the chest and stomach, she said.

The pair rolled over while Roach continued punching the officer, then he ran off and was found by Police reinforcements in Valley Heights Road after he jumped over a wall and injured his foot.

Robinson, of Vesey Street, pleaded guilty to assaulting a Police officer, escaping from custody, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance.

He was fined by acting senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves a total of $1000 for the attack and escaping from custody, $1000 for driving without insurance, and $250 for dangerous driving.

Robinson told the court he came to a complete stop, but was pulled off his bike by the officer.

He claimed he only started punching the officer when the policeman began attacking him.
