Man fined for weapon possession

A Pembroke man was fined $250 after being found with an extendable baton in Admiralty House Park.

Davel Smith of West Park Lane, 26, and unemployed, was searched by Police on August 27 under the Misuse of Drugs Act and arrested when he was found to have an ASP baton in his front, right pocket.

He told Police that he had just found out it and it was his for protection, Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.

Defence lawyer Llewellyn Peniston said in mitigation for Smith: "He found this weapon in the park and it was his misfortune to have been searched by the Police a short time later.

"Admiralty House Park has become somewhat of a hostile environment after hours and some would be tempted to hang on to a weapon they had found in that place."

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves fined Smith $250.
