A man was sentenced to three months in prison on Friday after assaulting his wife.

Derek Butterfield, 36, of Spice Hill Road, Warwick pleaded guilty to punching his wife in the head several times and kicking her in the leg on December 1.

Crown counsel Shade Subair told the court that Butterfield arrived at his wife?s evening computer class, approached his wife and, slamming her cellphone down on her desk, told her to listen to her messages.

Once outside the classroom Butterfield accused his wife of having a boyfriend. When she tried to explain herself the man punched her in the head and kicked her in the leg.

Acting Magistrate Tyrone Chin said he could not tolerate Butterfield?s assault.

?This is the mother of your two children,? Mr. Chin said.

But defence lawyer Peter Farge said the man had been provoked by his wife and requested a social inquiry report.

Mr. Chin rejected that argument and sentenced Butterfield to three months in prison with a strong suggestion that the man report to a substance abuse or an anger management programme.
