A Rockford Cycles employee received nine months in prison yesterday for attempting to pervert the course of justice in the Frederick Goring manslaughter case.

In Magistrates' Court, Jason Liburd, 32, of Devonshire, pleaded guilty to making false statements to the Police on November 12.

Crown counsel Charmaine Smith told the court that Liburd went to Hamilton Police Station and told Police officers that he had witnessed the incident.

Based on his information two men were arrested but officers later discovered that his story had conflicting information.

He admitted that he lied about the incident because he wanted the reward money to purchase crack cocaine.

Duty counsel Patrick Doherty said it was an ill-advised decision and he pleaded guilty to Police at the earliest possible moment.

Liburd said: "I did not do it to buy drugs, I did it to pay my rent and stuff. I don't make enough money at Rockford Cycles."

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves said: "You are a liar. It's as simple as that. You first lied to yourself and now you lie to the Police and the courts. Nine months in prison and this is taking into account your guilty plea.

"You will cause innocent people to be locked up."
