An admitted drug dealer received an extra year in prison - on top of a three year sentence - when drugs were found at his home which also happens to be near two schools.

His lawyer, however, is considering an appeal after the increased penalty zone element of his offence didn't appear in his client's original charges.

Roger Donald Minors, 54, of Cedar Avenue, Pembroke pleaded guilty in January to two counts of possession with the intent to supply, after more than 500 grams of marijuana was found on him and on his property in June of last year. Yesterday in Supreme Court, these offences alone prompted Justice Norma Wade Miller to give Minors a three-year sentence.

But Minors had to face an addition to his sentence because he was caught by Police at the corner of Court and Dundonald streets, which falls within an increased penalty zone due to its proximity to the Home School Excellence.

On top of that, his Cedar Avenue apartment, where a majority of the cannabis was found, falls in between Saltus Grammar School and the Muslim Community Centre's school.

Minors, who was employed at Stafford & Co. Ltd. as a floor layer, was picked up by Police last year when he was suspected of drug possession. Police found two packets of cannabis, as well as almost $2,000 in cash on him when he was taken to the police station But Police did not find a majority of Minors' 531.71 grams of marijuana until they had conducted a search of his apartment and car. An additional $8,000 in cash was also hidden in the apartment.
