More rain than usually falls for the entire month of August flooded the Island Saturday and Sunday, bringing the year-to-date rainfall to more than an inch above average.

And the Island is not high and dry yet ? a Bermuda Weather Service spokesperson said more clouds can be expected today, heralding the arrival of a low-pressure system which will bring more rain, thunder and wind to the Island by Thursday and Friday.

The spokesperson said the total August rainfall to date this year, not including yesterday?s rain, was 7.79 inches. The average for August is 5.64 inches.

Of that 7.79 inches, a whopping 7.26 inches fell over Saturday and Sunday.

Even that was no match for the all-time daily rainfall record, however ? in April of 1902 a Biblical-style flood of 11.38 inches fell in a mere 24 hours.

Though Thursday and Friday may bring more thunder and rain, the wind will not be as strong, the spokesperson said. Last weekend sustained winds reached 25-30 knots while gusts packed a punch of 46 knots. This time around the wind is expected to gust to 25 knots.
