New office building will sport plaque honouring local athletes

Shawn Goater will be the first of the Island?s professional athletes to be listed on an honorary plaque at a proposed six-storey Hamilton office building.

Sago Limited ? care of Trott & Duncan ? has sought final Planning approval to build a new, six-storey mixed use commercial/office building with access road at No. 9, Par-la-Ville Road, Hamilton.

Sago already received in-principle Planning approval on September 8, 2005 for the development at the site of the bulldozed ?Just Shirts? Laundromat, however, final Planning permission is necessary before development could begin.

Architect Charlita Saltus of Conyers & Associates told Planning on April 27, that a public art display at the entrance to the new 45,355 square foot building was inspired by the forthcoming retirement of the professional footballer.

?The dedication plaque to the athletes will list their names, career sports and the years of their international achievements,? Ms Saltus said in the application.

?The type of stone proposed is flamed granite, two feet square minimum.?

Local stone engravers Sticks & Stones will produce the large tiles, she added.

Room for about a dozen tiles could be seen on the building plans.

?It is our intention to meet with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation and other sporting organisations like the Bermuda Olympic Association, Bermuda Cricket Board and Bermuda Football Association to obtain a list of eligible candidates,? she said in the application.
