Keep Bermuda Beautiful will be "about more than picking up trash" in the future, according to new president Susan Amos.

And the environmental charity has a new home on Princess Street after being evicted from its Church Street offices last month.

Mrs. Amos, who was elected president last Tuesday, succeeds Madeline Daisley who stepped down from the post earlier this year leaving the presidency vacant for several months.

"KBB is expanding its mission to include litter prevention and waste management and reduction, together with monitoring the long-term impact our waste has on the environment and on quality of life," Mrs. Amos said.

This is a new focus for an organisation which was founded "with a mandate of picking up litter" said Mrs. Amos.

"We must preserve our health and quality of life," she said. "We should be concerned with more that mere physical appearances.

"I wish to broaden the focus of the KBB to include the long-term deleterious effects of litter and pollution on the environment," she said, giving the example of "the devastating impact that the helium balloons and other plastic litter have on sea turtles".

Mrs. Amos, who has been a KBB board member since 1999, said: "We - KBB and the community of Bermuda - must strive to preserve, indeed enhance, what we have in our beautiful home.

"I believe there is a direct correlation between environmental health and the social health of the community, together with its financial well being. After all, tourists don't come to Bermuda to see trash!"

Mrs. Amos' election comes only weeks after KBB was forced to leave its offices on Church and Parliament streets.

Assuring The Royal Gazette that her election had no relation to the recent turmoil, Mrs. Amos said KBB has successfully relocated to an office at 10 Princess Street, Hamilton, where it has a one-year lease.
