Police are refusing to say whether an officer accused of sexual assault is still on duty or has been suspended.

The 34-year-old officer appeared at Magistrates' Court on Wednesday charged with sexually assaulting a 32-year-old woman in Warwick on December 8.

Following the appearance, the officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was released on bail until January 8 but ordered to surrender his travel documents and report weekly to Hamilton Police Station.

On Wednesday, Police said it was being decided whether the officer would remain on duty and they would have an answer by the end of the day, but they did not return calls to confirm what action, if any, had been taken.

A Police spokesman yesterday said the force would be making no comment.
