Noah?s little helper

Fundraising for the victims of Hurricane Katrina took on new form last Saturday, in the hands of a young grocery packer.

Freya Lawrence, 13, has packed bags every Saturday at Miles Market to make pocket money for herself, but last Saturday she kept the money aside for a group of Katrina?s victims that were forgotten in the immediate aftermath of the disaster ? the thousands of pets belonging to those who were forced to evacuate.

Wearing a sign around her neck explaining that all her earnings of the day would go towards helping these stranded and helpless Mississippi residents, Freya managed to invoke the generosity of countless weekend shoppers.

Her efforts were rewarded with more than quadruple the amount she normally makes, and she went home that evening with almost $400.

She will be continuing her fundraising efforts for the rest of the week at the Bermuda High School for Girls (BHS). The money raised will go to Noah?s Wish ? a non-profit animal welfare organisation that rescues and cares for animals during disasters.

Freya will be back at Miles this Saturday with another sign around her neck ? ?Thank You?.
