A damaged wall at the junction of Middle Road near Saltus Cavendish in Devonshire will be rebuilt to resolve future problems and flooding.

The wall and road on Watlington Road West were at the centre of parliamentary questions put to Works and Engineering Minister Ashfield DeVent by Opposition Leader and Party Whip John Barritt in the House of Assembly on Friday.

The Ministry of Works and Engineering said he became aware of the damaged road in February.

When asked if the road remained safe for traffic, Mr. DeVent said: “Cracks in the road were investigated by the excavation of a trench approximately 30 metres long, primary to confirm the integrity of the water mains.

“No problems were found and the trench was reinstated and resurfaced.

The road has been under regular inspection and no further cracking of the road surface has occurred. He added that further deterioration that has taken place could have been caused by Hurricane Fabian.

The area of road also has drainage problems and “the Ministry prepared a proposal to rebuild the wall in a new location enabling a sidewalk to be constructed in which a suitable soakaway could be constructed”.

The Ministry has funds available for the project and the work will begin as soon as the necessary land has been purchased, said the Minister.
