A mother and son are lucky to be alive after nearly being struck by lightning during last weekend?s thunderstorms.

Juanita Knight and her son Stefan, 15, were about to leave Court Street in their Nissan March when a bolt of lightning hit their car and lit it up with blue light and sparks all around.

Ms Knight was parked under a utility pole outside Dub City Record Store when the sparks flew.

She said she did not see any lightning in the sky but saw heavy rain and heard a loud bang.

A wire had come down from the pole she was parked under, Ms Knight said.

She added that she did not feel any vibration or heat when her car was hit by lightning but screamed in horror.

She said she waited five minutes before getting out of the car.

Customers in a beauty salon across the street said they saw lightning flickering all over the car and told Ms Knight that she and her son were very luckily.

After the three week old car was hit with the bolt of lightning it drove just fine but metal had melted into the windshield, said Ms Knight.

Ms Knight said that she has to replace four windows including the windshield ? but her electricals seemed to be fine.

She also found one long scratch on the side of her car and a few small ones on the bonnet.

Stefan was shaken up by the incident and is not keen about riding in the car again when the weather is bad, said Ms Knight.

Ms Knight and her son were not injured in the incident.

About 20 years ago Ms Knight had a similar experience when she witnessed a lady get electrocuted when an electrical wire had fallen into the wet road by Empire Grocery on North Shore Road.

She said when the lady stepped off of her porch on to the road she immediately dropped to the ground and was shaking.

The lady recovered from the ordeal.

Of the unusual occurrence Ms Knight said: ?I won?t be parking under electrical light poles anymore.?
