Parents at St. George's Pre-School are at the end of their tether after nearly a year of waiting for improvements to a playing field.

Children are restricted to limited parts of the field because of piles of dangerous building supplies - including wire mesh - and rubble and one parent's complaints have pushed her to contact The Royal Gazette.

The parent, who preferred not to be named, said she had been complaining for the past year about the wire mesh on the field, but that nothing had been done about it and no one would remove the offending wire mesh.

She said: "At one point they came and put up a barrier so that the children would not play there, but it should be removed because it's a safety hazard and the children do go behind there when the horse and buggies pass with cruise ship passengers.

"We, the parents, are going to draw up a petition to try and get this removed. Many of the parents worked really hard trying to get the area cleared last October and they have did nothing.

School administrator Helen Turini explained: "The project is called Learning Through Landscapes and is in conjunction with the Aquarium, but it was supposed to have been done this summer, but because of Hurricane Fabian the project was not done over the summer.

"There have been delays and also delay between the Park Rangers and the Department of Works and Engineering," said Ms Turini. "We are building pagodas for shade, with trees, and a butterfly garden and the aim was for the children to get involved as well."

She admitted that although the building supplies and rubble took away from the amount of play area and could be dangerous - it would not be removed for the moment. "We are hoping that the project can be finished in the near future... but teachers are keeping the children away from the dangerous areas."
