Marine Police have warned owners of ?party boats? to keep the music down or face six months in prison, a fine of $2,800 and risk having their boats impounded.

Marine Police said they have seen a rise in complaints from residents who live near the water about loud music from boats.

Police yesterday issued a reminder on the law regarding noise offences on the water.

The Summary Offences Act 1926 divides noise complaints into two categories based on the time of day the offence is committed.

Police can take action between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. if just one person in the area reports they were disturbed by noise from a boat.

Between 6 a.m. and 11.59 p.m. Police must have proof that the noise could be heard from 100 feet away and caused a disturbance.

Police may ascertain for themselves, if the noise is causing a disturbance, and take immediate action.
