Bermuda Hospitals Board is refusing to explain why forensic pathologist Dr. John Obafunwa resigned his position earlier than expected, leaving the Island without a forensic pathologist.

Dr. Obafunwa's three-year contract was supposed to run until the end of next month, but he left his post on July 31.

This means that the Island will once again need to fly in medical examiner Dr. Valerie Rao of Dade County, Miami, Florida, for serious criminal cases such as murders.

The Royal Gazette has been trying without success for three days to speak to Hospital Board Chief of Staff Dr. June Hill about why Dr. Obafunwa resigned his position.

Earlier, Dr. Hill issued a statement which merely said Dr. Obafunwa resigned his position, effective July 31.

"Contrary to reports, there is a pathologist in place at the hospital and the services here are running smoothly," said Dr. Hill in her statement.

"However, all pathologists are not forensic pathologists. Prior to Dr. Obafunwa, when the police department required forensic services, particularly for homicides and important complex prosecution cases, forensic services were obtained from medical examiner Dr. Valerie Rao.

"In fact, overseas forensic services have been obtained for the Police department for well over 20 years."

Dr. Obafunwa, who is understood to be in the United Kingdom, could not be contacted for comment.

Health Minister Nelson Bascome did not return a call requesting comment.
