Permission granted for temporary hostel

The Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) has been granted final Planning approval to build temporary hostel accommodations for 36 Police and construction workers in St. David?s.

BLDC applied in August to convert an existing former US Navy building at No. 22 Tommy Fox Road into a hostel.

The DAB said a building permit had to be issued before construction began, which was expected to take 12 to 18 months.

In order to protect the pleasantness of the neighbourhood, Planning permission was granted only until October 4, 2013 when the building must be removed and the land restored to its former condition, the DAB decision said.

BLDC will use the hostel to house foreign construction workers who are working on its projects in order to keep its costs down.

Officers of the Bermuda Police Service will also be temporarily housed there until another residence is complete.
