Bermuda's most famous beggar, Eugene McGowen (Jinx) Darrell, was jailed for seven weeks yesterday after being caught offending just hours after being given a week's conditional discharge for the same offence.

The 45-year-old homeless man, who now has around 50 convictions, pled guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He approached a woman on Reid Street on Wednesday and asked for money for something to eat. She reported it to nearby Police who swooped in. Darrell apologised to Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves and asked not to be jailed.

Mr. Greaves said: "You are very determined - to be caught begging on the same day.

"I gave you seven days to behave yourself, so I have to give you seven weeks in jail."
