The Progressive Labour Party will confirm its candidate for the Pembroke West by-election on Monday night.

The Pembroke branch selected its candidate on Thursday night at a meeting at party headquarters but it is keeping the identity under wraps until the Central Committee approves the nomination on Monday night.

The candidate will face Jahmal Simmons of the Opposition United Bermuda Party in the by-election on February 6 to replace UBP MP Gary Pitman announced his retirement last month.

PLP public relations officer Glenn Blakeney said last night that Central Committee approval of the candidate was a "formality."

We had a meeting last night and we've selected at branch level a candidate, however, the selection by the branch has yet to be approved by the executive and the central committee, and that's required in our protocol before the candidate is confirmed," said Mr. Blakeney.

"It is just a formality to have the candidate confirmed on Monday, and we are kind of embargoed about speaking to the candidate's identity until such times as the Central Committee confirms that."

Meanwhile, voters will be given the chance to check their names are on the parliamentary register for Pembroke West or to object to anyone contained in the list.

Parliamentary Registrar Lionel Dowling said yesterday that voters should check to ensure their names are the list or lodge objections to those who have been wrongly included.

The registration list will be on display until Tuesday at M. Soares and Son Grocery, Spanish Point, Point Mart, Cox's Hill, at post offices, police stations, and the Parliamentary Registrar in Burnaby Street, Hamilton.
