Bermuda Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith has become the first Bermudian elected to the executive of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP).

Mr. Smith becomes one of two first vice-presidents, serving with president Francis Forbes of Jamaica, vice-president Paul Farquharson of the Bahamas, secretary Keithly Benjamin of Anguilla, and immediate past president Hilton Guy of Trinidad and Tobago.

"I am very pleased that my colleagues have elected me second vice-president, the first Bermudian on the executive," said Mr. Smith yesterday.

"I am really looking forward to working with Commissioner Forbes, who has a very good reputation among his colleagues.

"It will mean a lot more travel in the Caribbean but I am looking forward to it."

Mr. Smith described the six-day ACCP conference at the Fairmont Hamilton hotel, which ended yesterday, as a great success.

He was looking forward to next year's conference in Trinidad, which will discuss youth crime - something of great relevance to Bermuda, he said.

Bermuda would soon have access to Interpol's newest intelligence data base called I24/7, which improved on the agencies' existing computer system, said Mr. Smith.

The conference was also updated on drug smuggling methods, and kidnapping trends in other Caribbean countries.
