In the wake of a recent Nigerian mail fraud campaign, Police yesterday advised that Bermudians should be cautious when they receive any international solicitations by mail - especially for humanitarian projects.

According to Police, Bermudians are still receiving mail, e-mail and faxes from fraudulent Nigerian dignitaries who promise huge returns if the recipient shares personal details - including his or her bank account number.

Now Police are alerting the public to be cautious with any international mail which requests funds, even if the sender appeals on the behalf of poor orphans or for the building of churches.

"Unfortunately in a great number of cases these requests are also false and the monies are not used to assist with churches, orphans or schools, but are used to the benefit of individual criminals acting together," Police said Police.

"We are appealing to the community to carefully consider any investment opportunities that are offered to them. If an investment sounds too good to be true, it most probably is too good to be true."

Police said that funds should be sent only to internationally recognised and regulated charities.
