Police carried out about 45 liquor licence checks over the Cup Match weekend - leading to the seizure of "plant material" from Club Azure at Southside.

The Force announced last week that it would be increasing the number of checks carried out on licensed premises, and Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith yesterday said they pulled in some positive results.

He said during the checks, ten people were also searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and two people were arrested for grievous bodily harm from Club 40 on Front Street in Hamilton.

The Commissioner said the Force would continue to be concerned about illegal activities on licensed premises and would continue to monitor them.

However, he said he had been encouraged by the support shown by management teams in bars and clubs, and said the Force would continue to work with them.

Mr. Smith said over the weekend Police had made 29 arrests. Ten were for offences under the misuse of drugs act, five were for drinking while impaired and others were outstanding warrants.

There were 41 road accidents for the holiday period, which was about the average of seven or eight a day, and he said that was despite huge volumes of traffic travelling from one end of the Island to the other.

He said: "The motoring public appear to have responded."

However, Police continue to appeal for witness to the accident that claimed the life of Dennis Furbert on Saturday.

Mr. Furbert was riding his pedal bike when he collided with a taxi on South Road at the junction with Rocklands Estate in Warwick.

The accident occurred at 2:40 p.m. Saturday and witnesses are asked to contact PC Paul Simons at 297-1122 with any information about the deadly collision.

Police would also like to speak to anyone with information about Mr. Furbert's activities and whereabouts on the day of his death.

Mr. Furbert, of Shadow Lane, was 48 years old.

Two swimmers were rescued off Fort St. Catherine's on Thursday and on Friday a man slipped on his yacht while cruising Paradise Lakes and dislocated his shoulder.

In general however, Marine Police reported they were pleased with the boating public.
