Police have reiterated their appeal for members of the public not to drink and drive tonight as they brace themselves for the New Year's Eve festivities.

During the last seven days over the holiday period, there have been seven drink driving arrests, which could ultimately lead to the drivers facing large fines and losing their licences for a year.

But Police spokesman Dwayne Caines urged others not to follow in that path and to leave their vehicles at home tonight.

"Over the New Year holiday, we will have a full compliment of officers on duty and one of the things they are going to be doing is targeting impaired drivers," said Mr. Caines.

"We would like to remind the public that they should exercise wise choices this New Year. If you choose to indulge in alcohol, simply get a designated driver to take you home, catch a cab, or stay out overnight. But do not drink and drive."

Mr. Caines said officers were pleased with the relatively low number of people caught over the limit during the Christmas period, however, he said without continued care that could all change.

"We are guardedly optimistic with the figures so far this year, but we don't want people to become complacent and to stop making good choices."

Mr. Caines said Police were also making an appeal to liquor licensed premises to be responsible when serving drinks to people tonight.

He added: "We are also asking friends and families to be sensible when they believe an individual close to them has drank too much to drive.

"If necessary, take away their keys," he said.
