Police warn of bogus websites

Police are warning the public to watch out for fraudulent websites designed to poach money meant for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"Unfortunately, after many disasters there are efforts to try and steal money that was given to assist with the recovery, Police said yesterday.

"The Fraud Unit is aware of reports from overseas that indicate a number of bogus websites are being set up, with the aim of soliciting donations to assist with the disaster."

Police said before locals donate on-line, they should validate the website by first checking www.fema.org which is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) web-site.

The Polce Service recommends giving to established charities like the Red Cross, United Way or Salvation Army.
