Police are issuing a warning to the public in the wake of a significant increase in breaking and entering offences Island-wide.

The only exception, they said, is St. George's Parish, which has not experienced any significant increase. The Knapton Hill area has been hit the hardest, however, with at least three burglaries occurring on Skyline Drive late on Wednesday evening.

"We are reminding the public to secure your homes at all times," said Police media relations manager Dwayne Caines.

"Make sure you do not leave any windows open as well as sliding doors. Please take care, do not leave money, wallets or handbags open or visible that thieves would have easy access to. Also do not leave valuable goods or jewellery lying around the house. Put all valuables in a safe and locked area, like a safe or a safety deposit box.

"Finally, lock all car doors at all times and do not leave money in your vehicle or anything of value in view of the public."

Most thefts in Bermuda are opportunistic crimes, he said. "Eliminate the opportunity and limit your chances of becoming a victim."

The vast majority of these break-ins have been occurring at night, according to Police.

There has also been a noticeable increase in vehicle thefts since October 25, coinciding with the incidences of breaking.

These include an unusually high number of four-wheel vehicles which were believed stolen and used as transportation by breakers.
