Premier Jennifer Smith yesterday called on the people of Bermuda to remember senior citizens when she officially launched Age Concern's `Bermuda Cares Week'.

At a proclamation ceremony at the City Hall, Ms Smith said, "We are, on this occasion, reminded to remember and applaud the work of caregivers and all those who contribute to the seniors' support systems," said the Premier.

"We are also reminded that while many seniors remain active, contributing members of society, some are unable to conduct their own affairs - whether due to ill health or whether due to social or financial limitations.

"Now, therefore..., we acknowledge the significance of the contribution made by our senior citizens and we recognise the equally significant contribution made by those who care for and support them."

And she called on everyone in Bermuda to join with Government, Age Concern and other agencies in remembering the needs of senior citizens on the Island and around the world.

Chairman of Age Concern Thomas Andersen thanked members of the public, the Premier and Health and Family Services Minister Nelson Bascome for attending the proclamation, and Bermuda Institute Steel Band for providing the music.

And he said it was just as important to remember the caregivers as it was the elderly.

"I believe that we all sense that this is a very important moment in the life of our community," said Mr. Andersen.

"This moment confirms our increasing awareness of the needs of the ageing population in Bermuda and our celebration of the very important work of caregivers in our midst.

"This moment also celebrates a process. That process includes the efforts of many people, over long periods of time, to increase the sensitivity of all to the needs of older people and to seek to hold these persons at the highest level of dignity and respect.

"We also know that this process will continue and that it will expand. Let us all participate as fully as is possible in Bermuda Cares Week, and in all that will follow.
