Whitney Institute?s principal said the speed limit on the road near his school is an accident waiting to happen.

Freddie Evans wants to see the speed limit lowered on Middle Road near the school were his students cross to go to the bus stop.

Currently, there is a sign posted that reads 35 kph and Mr. Evans said of the sign: ?The Highway Department put it up ? much to my contention.?

He added: ?They have done great things creating markings, but 35 kph is too fast.?

Mr. Evans said he would like to see the speed limit lowered at least during crossing hours.

New measures to improve road safety were announced early this year by Government following the death of six-year-old Tyaisha Cox last summer.

The new measures came from a technical committee set up after Tyaisha was hit by a car while crossing the road outside Purvis Primary School in Warwick on her way to summer camp.

Recommendations included:

Proposed creation of ?school zones? with lower speed limits.

Improved road markings and better signs.

Encouraging caution among the drivers in these zones.

Apply anti-skid coatings to road surfaces approaching bus stops.

Build elevated crosswalks; and

Build sidewalks at bus stops near schools where none exist.

Mr. Evans said that all of these recommendations were carried out except the elevated crosswalk and lowered speed limit.

He added: ?They have not lowered the speed but a sign has been posted which is unique.?

Mr. Evans said that he spoke with the Highway Department recently but they do not support lowering the speed limit and believe the improved road markings are sufficient.

Mr. Evans confessed that he was nervous at the beginning of school and at the end of the day because of children crossing the road. The road safety improvements outside of Whitney Institute were added at the beginning of the school year.
